The University of British Columbia

In 2012, I was invited to University of Columbia, Vancouver Canada, to collaborate with Dr. De Silva and his students in home-care project. This visiting was the pilot overseas internships which was sponsored by ministry of education Taiwan.

Dr. De Silva is Professor and Senior Canada Research Chair in Mechatronics and Industrial Automation. His Lab, Industrial Automation Laboratory, has vast equipments and robots for research. Currently, He is working on

▪Cooperative mobile robots for human rescue

▪Haptic teleoperation and autonomous mobile robots in homecare applications

▪Intelligent sensor fusion for machine health monitoring and supervisory control

This concept of home-care project is that robots are assisters for human at home and they can  provide the emergency aid for elders and patients. In order to construct this service, the home-care project was integrated with four systems, SLAM,  SWAM system, food analysis with spectrometer and outdoor unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) for security and navigation. I was working on the SLAM  in this project.

UBC members were studying Kinect at the same time. Therefore, I shared several knowledges and programs of kinect development. We mounted kinect on robots and developed some basic program to drive and receive the 3D data from Kinect cooperatively.

During the time in UBC,I also attended the seminar of department of Mechanical Engineering. I have learned a lot of knowledges from different presenters. Their researches were attractive and opened my mind.
